Pulmonology
Pediatric pulmonology deals with diseases of the airways and the lungs.
The most common symptoms are: cough, laboured breathing, sounds on inhalation, wheezing, exertional complaints and shortness of breath. The most common conditions in pediatric pulmonology are recurrent bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, croup, laryngotracheomalacia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) after long-term ventilation in the context of prematurity. Rarer lung diseases include cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis, exogenous allergic alveolitis, malformations, cystic-adenoid malformations and so on. History and examination findings are decisive but not always sufficient for making the diagnosis. It is extremely important that your child has not yet inhaled on the day of the examination.
Range of services
- Body plethysmography: this special lung-function machine allows measurement of total lung capacity and airway resistance (how narrow).
- Methacholine challenge: this examination measures the reactivity or hyperresponsiveness of the bronchi. It allows one to “measure asthma”.
- Bronchospasmolysis test: this measures the response to, for example, salbutamol. Children who respond well to salbutamol respond better to long-term therapy.
- Sweat test to rule out cystic fibrosis (CF)
- Complete allergological diagnostics (allergy test, nasal provocations etc.)
- Pulse oximetry
- Individual services are also possible. Should your pediatrician wish only for the “big lung function test” once a year, a methacholine test, or a nasal provocation before specific immunotherapy, this is possible with us at any time. We explain the findings to the parents but do not interfere with the therapy.
